We live in an era where knowledge is no longer scarce. With countless versions of “truth” available at our fingertips on the internet, it has never been more important to guard our minds. In 2 Corinthians 11:14, we’re reminded that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light—he often presents lies wrapped in packages that look like truth. This passage is especially relevant in our generation as we learn to grow in discernment. So what are some lessons on discernment we can draw from this?
First, protect your ears and be mindful of what you listen to. If a friend or voice—whether through music, media, or conversation—keeps saying things that your spirit knows are wrong, and you fail to check them or distance yourself, it will only dull your discernment and weaken your faith over time. Don’t just listen to everything and everyone; test everything against scripture. Second, watch out for your idols and “itchy ears.” The devil often uses our deepest cravings as a way in. For the Corinthians, it was their love for eloquence and powerful rhetoric. For you, it might be a desperate search for purpose, wealth, success, an entertaining preacher—whatever it is, pursuing anything above the knowledge of God puts you in danger. Lastly, always examine the motives behind a message. You can almost always tell when someone has monetized the gospel that their message is likely compromised. A true minister of the gospel will show selfless love for God’s people and put your salvation and growth first. You’ll see their heart in the way they serve.
