The World's Hatred

〰️

The World's Hatred 〰️

Reflections

The need to belong is a powerful psychological drive in humans. Any perceived exclusion or rejection can breed resentment and hostility. This is why simply expressing your devotion to God can provoke hatred from those who don’t understand your faith or whose ideals you have rejected. Therefore, It shouldn’t be of surprise when the world hates us for no reason. Jesus warned us in advance so that we would be prepared. Yes, we have to prepare for it. The world’s opposition should never cause you to shrink back from proclaiming your faith or standing by your convictions. So how do you prepare for it?

First, expect it. If you refuse to conform to the world, criticism or persecution is inevitable. In today’s culture, that might mean being "canceled" on social media. Prepare your heart for it. Understand the reason behind it. The hatred isn’t personal. No matter how kind-hearted or well-intentioned you are, opposition will come simply because you stand for Christ. Resolve to persevere. Develop a tough skin and push through. Persecution is temporary—people move on, and so should you. Most importantly, rely on the Holy Spirit. He is our Helper, given to strengthen and sustain us through every challenge, sent for our advantage.

Study Questions

  1. Who was Jesus speaking to in this passage, and how does this conversation fit within the larger narrative of the Bible?

  2. What is the role of the Holy Spirit as our Advocate? Study the Greek term Paraklētos within the context of the ancient Greek legal system to gain a deeper understanding.

  3. In what ways have you personally experienced or witnessed hostility from unbelievers because of your faith? How did it affect you, and how did you respond?

  4. What did you learn about God’s nature, His ways and His will from today’s reading?

Highlight

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” ‭‭John‬ ‭15:18-19 ESV
