Live As You Are Called

Reflections
Paul has just reminded the Corinthians to “live as you are called,” but he goes further to emphasize that it is not merely about being content in your purpose and circumstances. Rather, it is about ensuring that the pursuit of our present reality does not distract us from the ultimate goal—Christ.
The appointed time is short; do not let your present realities consume you to the point of losing sight of the task and goal ahead. Everything you worry about now is fleeting and temporary, for this present world is passing away. This message is especially relevant in our time, where there is an almost obsessive emphasis on marriage and relationships. Social media has amplified this, providing a window into countless relationships—many of which we would have otherwise known nothing about. As a result, many single people become consumed with the pursuit of relationships and marriage, often leading them into unhealthy or even harmful situations.
Even within the church, marriage can sometimes be idolized under the guise of godly desire, subtly shifting our focus away from God’s greater purpose for our lives. Marriage itself, while a blessing, can also become a source of distraction. The constant concerns and anxieties about spouse and children can cause married individuals to take their eyes off their divine calling.
Paul’s goal was to remind believers of this and to secure their undivided devotion to the Lord (v. 35). This should also be our goal. The key is to remain aware and intentional in whatever situation God has called us to, ensuring that our focus always remains on Christ.
Study Questions
Highlight every place in Chapter 7 where Paul says an instruction is from God. Look for the cross reference where the instruction was given by God. Also, underline every place where Paul says an instruction is his own opinion.
Why was it important that Paul made this distinction in the source of the instructions? How can we apply that in our ministry and ministrations?
Summarize Paul’s view on Marriage and celibacy.
