Day 3

Today’s reading: Romans 2:1-29

Self Righteousness

〰️

Self Righteousness 〰️

Reflections

There is often a tendency to look at someone who has committed a heinous crime and think we are better than they are. Yet, the truth is humbling: we are no better than the worst sinner. This may be difficult to hear, but it is a necessary humility to embrace if we are to understand God’s grace. Even at your most righteous, you would not stand a chance before Him. None of us have the moral standing to condemn another.

In today’s reading, Paul reminds the Jews that they were no better than the Gentiles, even though they were the original custodians of the law. This truth remains relevant today. Neither religiosity nor self-righteousness can guarantee salvation. You may have grown up as a pastor’s child, never missed a single church service, and have a perfect bible-reading streak. Yet none of these achievements have the power to save you. God judges each of us the same way. He gives no preference to your spiritual disciplines if it hasn’t led to a surrendered heart. Perhaps you look down on others who lack your understanding or spiritual discipline, yet pride in your knowledge is just as empty as the dead forms of godliness you despise. Let this truth challenge you to examine your own heart. Release any pride or self-righteousness, and remember that we all stand equally in need of the mercy of God.

Study Questions

  1. Conduct a word study on the Greek word “krino”, translated as "judge" in the 2:1. How does this differ from other forms of judgment, such as discerning or judging with your senses?

  2. Paul explains the irrelevance of circumcision in regards to salvation. In your own understanding, summarize his argument.

  3. When you correct and give advice to others, what are your motives in doing so? Is it coming from a place of sanctimonious pride or a place of love to see them saved?

  4. What did you learn about God’s nature, His ways and His will from today’s reading?

Highlight

“No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭2:‭29 ‭NIV
