Makings of our Calling

Makings of our Calling 〰️

Reflections

In our journey to discover our purpose, we’ll hear many opinions on what we should become. Just because others see something special in us doesn’t mean we should follow their view. The key to aligning with God’s calling is listening for His voice. For John the Baptist, it didn’t matter what others said about him or his personal ambitions; all that mattered was what God’s Word said about his calling, and that was his true identity.

Have you ever wondered why the disciples so readily followed Jesus? Peter and Nathanael, called by their peers, shared a common trait: they were expectant. They had studied the Scriptures, knew the prophecies, and had likely prayed for this moment. Their hearts were already surrendered, waiting for the Messiah—just like John. When they met Jesus, it was easy for them to recognize the fulfillment of what they had been seeking.

Many people wonder about their purpose or say they want something from God, but without action, hunger, or zeal. If you seek direction from God, start where you are! How hungry are you? What does the Bible say about your calling? Do you know off the top of your head what God’s Word says about you and your purpose? Have you truly prayed for direction? God responds to hungry, yielding hearts. It is the hungry who will be filled.

Study Questions

  1. In John 1:25, why do the Pharisees question John the Baptist about his role as a baptizer, suggesting that he could be the Christ or Elijah? Consider Zechariah 13:1 and examine the surrounding context for further insights.

  2. Why did Jesus’ statement about the fig tree readily convince Nathanael? What do you think Jesus saw under the tree? Use a commentary for possible explanations.

  3. Where does the title "Son of Man" originate, and in what contexts is it typically used in Scripture?

  4. What are some things others have said you’re good at doing? Do these align with God’s calling for you? How is personal ambition corresponding or conflicting with your calling?
