Reflections

There’s always that one person who only reaches out when they need something. Maybe it's your younger sibling who showers you with sweet words only when they want a favor. While you may feel obligated to help them, it doesn’t bother you as much because there's already a relationship in place. However, it would be frustrating if that were the only reason they maintained a relationship with you.

Now, think about this: if you were no longer guaranteed anything material from God, would you still come to Him? Would you still serve Him? God knows our hearts and the true motivations behind our actions, even when we haven’t fully acknowledged them ourselves. When Jesus saw the crowds coming to Him, He wasn’t impressed by their enthusiasm. He knew they weren’t seeking Him, but rather what He could give them. That’s hurtful.

For someone who anticipates our needs and provides for us even before we ask, wouldn’t it be reasonable to approach Him with a genuine love for who He is, rather than what He can give? Our primary motivation in seeking God should be a deep longing to be with Him, both here on earth and for eternity.

Study Questions

  1. Reflect on Jesus’ words in John 6:26-27. What do you notice about the focus of your own prayers? Are they primarily centered around your material needs, or do they reflect a deeper desire for intimacy with Jesus?

  2. According to John 6:28-29, what is the one thing God requires from us to receive eternal life?

  3. Compare the crowd's behavior in John 6 with the Israelites’ behavior in Exodus 16:4-36. What are some key similarities in how they responded to God's provision

  4. What did you learn about God’s nature, His ways and His will from today’s reading?

Highlight

“It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.” ‭‭John‬ ‭6:45-47 ‭ESV
