Essential Tools for an Exegetical Bible Study

1. Study Bibles

Digging deeper into Scripture requires dwelling on each verse, meditating, and sometimes researching word by word. That is why this plan is spread out—to give you time to study thoroughly each day. Study Bibles are invaluable for verse-by-verse exploration. Two excellent options are the Faithlife Study Bible and the Spirit-Filled Life Bible. You can purchase a hardcopy of the latter here.

2. Lexicons & Bible Dictionaries

To dive deeper into specific words, Bible dictionaries and lexicons provide context and meaning in the original Greek or Hebrew languages.

  • The Lexham Bible Dictionary is an excellent choice for word study and research.

  • Lexicons help translate Greek and Hebrew words into English for a clearer understanding. My go-to is the Concise Dictionary of Words Greek and Hebrew Lexicon.

  • If you prefer a hardcopy resource, consider the Key Word Greek and Hebrew Bible, which you can purchase here.

3. Multiple Translations

Using multiple Bible translations enhances your understanding. I recommend:

  • At least one word-for-word translation: KJV, NKJV, NASB, or ESV.

  • A thought-for-thought translation: NLT, NET, or NIV.

  • Optionally, a paraphrase translation: MSG, TPT, or CEV (use these cautiously).

The YouVersion Bible App allows you to compare translations side by side using its split-screen feature.

4. Commentaries

Commentaries offer verse-by-verse explanations from scholars and theologians who have studied Scripture extensively. While helpful, remember that these are personal interpretations and should be evaluated carefully. My favorites include Matthew Henry’s Commentary and David Guzik’s Enduring Word Commentary.

Other Helpful Study Tools

  • Cross-References: Use cross-references to find other passages that discuss the same idea or principle. Scripture interprets Scripture, ensuring consistency and clarity.

  • Bible Atlas: A Bible atlas provides geographical context, helping you visualize the locations mentioned in Scripture.
