Reflections

Just because you're going through a difficult period doesn't mean God loves you any less. People may question God’s love for you based on your struggles, but you must reject that false narrative and hold firmly to your faith. Though Martha initially didn’t believe that Jesus could raise her brother, as she didn’t yet understand that dimension of His miraculous power, she still believed in Jesus as a person. She loved Him and was committed to Him, and when the revelation of His power came to her, it became easier for her to believe.

More than anything, it is crucial to develop an intimate relationship with Jesus. Our confidence during trials is built on this relationship. It’s easier to believe someone you are close to than a stranger. Even if you don’t fully understand their abilities, you will trust a close friend because you know they have your best interests at heart. Similarly, when we cultivate a deep relationship with Jesus, we can trust in His goodness and power, even when we don’t fully comprehend the way He works in our lives.

Study Questions

  1. Why did Jesus wait until Lazarus died before going to visit him? What was the significance of His delay in the context of His divine purpose?

  2. In John 11:9, Jesus uses a proverb in response to His disciples' concerns. In your own words, explain what Jesus was trying to convey with this statement. Use a commentary for your understanding.

  3. In John 11:26, Jesus asks Martha a fundamental question for Christianity. How would you respond to His question, "Do you believe this?" and what are your reasons?

  4. What did you learn about God’s nature, His ways and His will from today’s reading?

Highlight

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”” ‭‭John‬ ‭11:25-26 ESV
