Reflections
In this passage, we see a deeply emotional and revealing moment in the ministry of Jesus. After hearing that Lazarus was sick, Jesus intentionally delayed His journey, knowing that Lazarus would die. When He finally arrives, Mary and Martha are in mourning, but Jesus knows the greater purpose behind this delay: to reveal the glory of God.
As Jesus speaks to Martha, He challenges her belief, asking if she believes in His power to raise the dead. Martha, though distraught, expresses her faith in the resurrection on the last day, but Jesus expands her vision. “I am the resurrection and the life,” He declared. Here, we see Jesus inviting us to move beyond our limited understanding of God’s timing and His power. He isn't bound by time or circumstance; He is the Beginning and the End. We are often limited by our human comprehension of time and space but we forget that there is One who exists outside of time. In other words, it is never too late or too early for God to move. When you have done all that is required of you to do and it still seems like things aren’t going according to plan, trust that it is for a reason and God is in control. Like Mary and Martha, we must choose to trust that God's timing, though often beyond our comprehension, is always perfect. He is the resurrection and the life, and He will not leave us in despair.
