Fragrance of Worship 〰️
Reflections
In the other gospel accounts of this story, the focus is often on the cost of the fragrance and its significance as an anointing for Jesus' impending death. However, John’s account provides deeper insight into why Mary was able to offer such an extravagant gift. In the preceding chapter, we learn that Mary had just experienced the heartbreaking loss of her beloved brother, Lazarus. But then Jesus came and literally brought him back to life. For someone who had restored her loved one from the dead, there was absolutely nothing too precious to give in return.
Do you see yourself in the same position as Mary? Yes we, who were once dead in sin, have been raised to life in Christ Jesus. We have received new life, and because of this, we should worship God with everything we have. The depth of our worship and consecration reflects the extent of our understanding of what Christ has done for us. If we know little about God, then our worship to Him we also be limited by our limited understanding. When we truly grasp the magnitude of His sacrifice, nothing is too great to offer in response. This is an invitation for you to learn more about God, His wills and His ways. which will lead to outpour of worship to the Father.
Study Questions
In your own words, explain Jesus’ parable in John 12:23-26. Use a commentary for further insight.
What prophecy was fulfilled by Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem? How does the triumphal entry and its element e.g. the use of a donkey instead of a horse, reflect the contrast between the people’s expectation of a political Messiah and the true nature of Jesus’ mission?
What is God asking of you that feels too costly or irrational? How can you respond in faith, trusting that His plans are ultimately for your good?
What did you learn about God’s nature, His ways and His will from today’s reading?
