Reflections

Jesus set the ultimate example for us, and we are called to follow Him. In our journey here on earth, service to others is a vital aspect of our relationship with God. Christ has called us to wash the feet of others. In a practical sense, this means humbly serving our neighbors, sometimes even sacrificing our own needs to help them.

But in light of our spiritual reality, washing our neighbor’s feet also means washing them with the water of the Word, guiding them towards holiness. This could involve evangelizing with patience, even when faced with criticism and rejection. It may also mean being the bigger person in relationships, setting aside our pride, and consistently helping others grow and change. Serving in this way doesn’t diminish your worth. As Jesus said, “The slave is not greater than his master.”

Jesus washed the disciples’ feet to symbolize the ultimate service He would provide on the cross, reconciling us to God. In the same way, we wash with the water of the Word to help facilitate the reconciliation of our brothers and sisters to God. This act of humble service is central to our Christian calling, reflecting Christ’s love and grace in the world.
