Reflections
God is deeply intentional about protecting and preserving us. In John 17, Jesus’ prayer to the Father serves as both a request and a promise—He prays not only for our spiritual security but also for our physical well-being. Jesus asks God to shield His followers from the evil in the world while also keeping them in holiness.
Now, we see this prayer in action. Though He was about to endure the cross to redeem and sanctify us, His salvation extended beyond the spiritual. Jesus willingly surrendered Himself to ensure the safety of His disciples. This moment powerfully illustrates Romans 8:32: “Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?”
God’s commitment to keeping us should fill us with unwavering assurance. His investment in our well-being—both physical and spiritual—surpasses even our own, and He has bound Himself to His word, which will never fail. Because He has spoken it, He is faithful to fulfill it. When we stumble, we can rest in the certainty of His promise to restore us, just as we see in Peter’s story. If we distance ourselves from God after we fall, it is often our own guilt and shame that keep us away. This is why it is crucial to be deeply rooted in God’s word, holding fast to His promises, so that when we falter, we are drawn back to His unwavering love and faithfulness.
Study Questions
Examine the actions of both Jesus and Peter in this chapter. What is the significance of Jesus’ complete surrender to God’s will, and how does it contrast with humanity’s natural inclination toward self-preservation and control?
When confronted, Jesus responded with "Ego Eimi." Using a Greek lexicon, explore the meaning of this phrase and explain how it affirms Jesus’ divinity.
What is the significance of Jesus being tried and executed by the Romans rather than the Jews? How does this align with the broader narrative of redemption and salvation?
What did you learn about God’s nature, His ways and His will from today’s reading?
