Reflections
Children are fascinating and often hilarious, but they’re not the best keepers of important information. They may not grasp the weight of what they’ve been told, and, more often than not, they’ll share it freely with their entire school. This is a picture of how things work in the kingdom of God. If God cannot entrust you with the revelation of deep mysteries, it’s a sign that you are still a spiritual infant.
The difference in the truth we can receive in the kingdom of God is not a matter of kind, but of depth. Every doctrine that can be taught in a seminary can also be taught to children—though, of course, in simpler terms. However, within every doctrine, there are layers of depth, and your level of spiritual maturity determines how much you can grasp.
A key indicator of that maturity is your spiritual appetite. Take a moment to assess what you’re most drawn to. Do you only engage with those lighthearted, humorous sermons? Are you mainly interested in superfluous messages about relationships? Do you prefer teachings that rely heavily on drama, props, or spectacle to hold your attention? If so, you may have an appetite problem—or, more importantly, a growth problem.
