Reflections

What is the purpose of communion? As the name implies, it signifies fellowship with and in Christ. From chapter 10, we learn that partaking in the Lord’s Supper together is a proclamation of our belief in the death and resurrection of Christ, as well as a fellowship with those who share that same belief. In chapter 11, Paul emphasizes that the Lord’s Supper must be taken together, in unity. Therefore, the focus is unity.

As believers who understand the gospel, division and condescension should have no place among us. The very essence of our faith tells us that we were all condemned. You are no better than the next person; it is only through Christ’s death that we are redeemed—those of us who believe in Him. In what matters most to us, nothing makes you better than your neighbor.

So whenever we, as believers, eat and gather—whether at Passover or love feasts, Christmas or Easter, church services or fellowships—we must always remember why we are gathered: to commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus as one body. And so we must do it in unity, reflecting the love of Christ.

  2. What does it mean to eat the Lord’s Supper in an unworthy manner?

  3. Examine the way communion is performed or omitted in your local assembly. Does it conform to Paul’s teachings?

  4. What did you learn about God’s nature, His ways and His will from today’s reading?
