Gifts of The Spirit

Gifts of The Spirit 〰️

Reflections

When the topic of spiritual gifts is discussed, it is often limited to the list found in 1 Corinthians 12:8–10. However, it’s important to recognize that this list was never meant to be exhaustive. The Greek word charisma means “something given by grace,” which implies that any manifestation, activity, or service that we would have otherwise not been able to do by human strength alone and therefore done through the enablement of the Holy Spirit is, in fact, a spiritual gift.

There are a variety of gifts and ministries, but they all originate from God—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and are not given for our personal gain, but for the benefit of others. As the saying goes, “Where the purpose of a thing is unknown, abuse is inevitable.” This is why it’s essential to understand and always remember the purpose of spiritual gifts. They are not meant to serve our ego or elevate our status. They are given to edify the body of Christ and to reveal the glory of God to the world.

The emphasis, then, is this: whatever gifts we have received by the grace of God, we must use them to serve others and bring glory to Him. Whether in our workplaces, our churches, or the marketplace—everywhere—we are called to steward our gifts and talents in a way that benefits others and showcases God's grace.

Study Questions

  1. The word gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:1 was added by translators. What is the meaning of the Greek word pneumatikon, and how does it shape our understanding of the passage? How do “gifts,” “ministries,” and “activities” differ from one another as described in verses 4–6?

  2. Carefully study the manifestations listed in verses 8–10. How would you describe each one in your own words? Do you actively desire and seek these gifts in your walk with God?

  3. What role do you play in the body of Christ? Are you aware of your primary spiritual gift or area of ministry? How are you using your gift to serve and strengthen the body?

  4. What did you learn about God’s nature, His ways and His will from today’s reading?

Highlight

“that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.” ‭‭1 Corinthians 12:25-26 ESV
