Reflections
1 Corinthians 13 is widely known as the “love chapter” of the Bible and is most often applied to romantic relationships. While it certainly holds value in that context, it's important to understand the original intent and the principle behind it. Paul concludes the previous chapter by urging us to earnestly desire spiritual gifts—but, as with everything related to God, the condition of your heart matters deeply—perhaps even more than the desire itself.
It is possible to be generous for the wrong reasons, just as it is possible to desire and even use spiritual gifts with the wrong motives. So at all times, examine your heart. Question your motives. Ask yourself: Why do I desire this so much? Why did I do this for that person? Why am I serving? Because to God, it doesn't matter how grand or benevolent your actions appear to others—if they are not done out of genuine love, they hold no eternal value.
Actions rooted in Agape—that sacrificial, selfless, unconditional kind of love—prevent abuse and misuse of the gifts. That is the message Paul was conveying. The desire to receive and use spiritual gifts must be driven by love for God’s people. That alone ensures we steward them properly and in alignment with God’s heart.
