Reflections
What is the correct way to use spiritual gifts? The most effective way is to align them with God’s purpose. It’s important to remember that we are merely stewards of everything we possess—including our gifts and talents. As stewards, we are not to manage what has been entrusted to us according to our own desires or agendas; rather, we must follow the direction of our Master and align our actions with His purpose.
In chapters 12 and 13, Paul discusses both the purpose and the motive for using spiritual gifts, helping us understand that God’s intention is always central. Therefore, when using spiritual gifts, we must continually ask: Which gift serves God's purpose in this moment? This is the mindset we must adopt.
Ask yourself: Is what I’m doing right now truly benefiting God’s people—or just me? Is it building unity, or is it making others feel excluded? God’s will is that we all grow and benefit together as one body, leaving no one behind. This principle applies not only to spiritual gifts but to everything God has given us to steward.
Study Questions
Based on 1 Corinthians 14:1–5, why does Paul consider some spiritual gifts greater than others, as mentioned earlier in 12:31?
What is the purpose of the gift of tongues? Why did God give it in the first place? Study the first mention of the word “tongues” in the Bible (Genesis 11), and use commentaries to support your understanding.
Reflect on your own use of spiritual gifts. In what ways might they be misapplied or underutilized, and how can you realign them with God’s intended purpose?
What did you learn about God’s nature, His ways and His will from today’s reading?
