Reflections
What is the gospel? We’ve seen the word appear in several verses of Scripture, but do you truly know what it means? Many people who believe they are saved cannot clearly explain what they claim to believe. This is dangerous. In the kingdom of God, knowledge is not optional—it’s essential. We are saved through faith, but faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Therefore, we must know in order to believe.
The gospel, simply put, is this: In His great mercy, God gave us—once sinners—a new birth into a living hope through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We are no longer separated from God, and we now have eternal life through faith in Him. Every element of this message must be believed for salvation to be genuine.
But it doesn’t stop there. We must also understand the reason for and the significance of each of these elements. Why was it necessary for Jesus to die? What is the significance of His resurrection for us as believers? Before Jesus ascended, Luke 24:44–49 records that He opened the minds of the apostles to understand these very things—explaining through the Scriptures why He had to suffer, die, and rise again. The call to action today is this: Study every element of salvation. Understand it deeply. Your eternal destiny depends on it. Don’t leave it to chance—know it, believe it, live it.
Study Questions
What was Paul’s first line of evidence for the death and resurrection of Christ in 1 Corinthians 15? Why do you think he began with that? What lesson can we draw from this?
What do you think Paul meant by his statement in verse 29 ("baptized for the dead")? Consult a commentary to aid your understanding.
Are you personally convinced that Christ is risen? Why? If yes, could you confidently explain and defend this belief to an unbeliever?
What did you learn about God’s nature, His ways and His will from today’s reading?
