Reflections

Many of us have questions about the afterlife and what it will look like—and thankfully, God has not left us without answers. But first, let’s begin with how we get there and the kind of vessel required for that journey.

We know that the wages of sin is death, and Christ had to die our death to pay our debt. This means that if we are saved, we no longer face eternal death—we now have eternal life. The challenge, however, lies in the fact that the body we currently live in is perishable and subject to decay. It has an expiration date. If we had to live forever in this body beyond its expiry, the consequences would be unthinkable. Imagine the stench, the appearance, even the process of decomposition. Clearly, we need another body. But the need for a new body isn’t only due to decay—it’s also because we require a body that is fit for where we are going. If we are going to dwell in the realm of spirits, then we must be clothed in spiritual bodies. After all, a zebra in a herd of elephants would stand out like a sore thumb.

The good news is that our new body will be free from the seed of corruption found in our mortal bodies. We will no longer be subject to sin, temptation, or suffering. Instead, we will be able to dwell forever in God’s presence—filled with joy, laughter, and goodness. This is the hope we look forward to. This is the reason we continue to press forward in our faith.

Study Questions

  2. In verses 42-44, Paul contrasts the natural body with the spiritual body. What do each of these terms mean within the context? How does this contrast explain the resurrected body?

  3. What Old Testament scriptures are quoted in verses 54-57? How do these quotes support Paul’s message of resurrection victory? What promises are fulfilled?
