Reflections

When it comes to the subject of money and the church, many Christians grow uncomfortable — and sometimes, with good reason. The topic of money has been misused and abused by some church leaders. However, it’s important to remember that Jesus Himself spoke extensively about money, Paul addressed it openly, and ultimately, there is no worship without sacrifice. In a time where money is the currency for trade and provision, it remains a subject that must be taught with wisdom and integrity.

Here are three key lessons from this exhortation: Firstly, giving to the church is not optional. Paul makes it clear when he says, “it’s a must.” There may be ongoing debates about whether tithing is strictly an Old Testament law, but the underlying principle is beyond dispute. Jesus teaches us to give — both to our fellow believers and to those who labor to bring the gospel to us. Secondly, giving requires intentionality**.** This principle not only encourages us to budget our finances wisely but also to make giving a planned, consistent part of that budget. Generosity should be purposeful, not impulsive or occasional. Lastly, managing money in the church demands accountability and transparency. As a church member, it’s healthy and biblical to be aware of how your contributions are being used. Volunteer for outreaches and programs; see where the resources go. You might be surprised by the practical expenses involved in running a church. If you notice something concerning, raise it — but do so in love and humility. For ministry leaders, it is not only wise but scriptural to operate with openness and integrity.

Study Questions

  1. In what ways are you currently supporting the church and honoring those who have labored over you through your financial giving? How can you improve in this area?

  2. What is the meaning and significance of Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 16:22? Why do you think he concluded the letter this way?

  3. Summarize the key issues Paul addressed throughout 1 Corinthians, along with his practical and theological solutions. How do these lessons apply to your life and faith walk today?

  4. What did you learn about God’s nature, His ways and His will from today’s reading?
