Reflections

Paul had an overwhelming desire to see his people saved, to the extent that he was willing to be accursed if it meant their salvation. While we may not face the same dangers as the apostles in spreading the gospel, we should still carry a deep longing for others to come to Christ—regardless of the criticism we might receive. This is how we demonstrate our love for God. Salvation is a beautiful gift of grace that should be shared with all, and we each have a role in delivering this gift. “…And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?” — Romans 10:14 (NLT).

A desire for people’s salvation is not enough; we must actively share the good news, starting with those around us. We cannot assume that just because someone has been in church for a long time, they truly understand the gospel. A misplaced zeal that is not rooted in the righteousness of Christ is dangerous. The message of salvation must begin, center on, and end with Christ.

Furthermore, there are two essential elements in receiving salvation: believing in our hearts and confessing with our mouths. Why is confession so important? Because when we openly declare something, it signifies true belief and serves as a public commitment to the path we have chosen. These are all cohesive parts that must work together to bring about salvation.

Study Questions

  1. What does it mean that Christ is the end of the law in Romans 10:4? How does this shape our understanding of righteousness?

  2. In Romans 10:8-10, Paul explains how salvation is obtained. What are the key elements he mentions, and what do they reveal about the nature of faith and confession?

  3. Why does Paul emphasize the urgency of spreading the gospel? What reasons does he give, and how should this influence our own approach to evangelism?

  4. How can we actively redirect our hope and that of those around us to focus solely on the righteousness obtained for us through Jesus?
