Reflections

Have you ever moved to a new city or country—especially one that is culturally different from where you come from—and felt like the people there couldn’t worship God the way you do? I know I have. This is a common struggle, particularly among Christians of African descent who relocate and find it difficult to connect with a church that feels unfamiliar.

As humans, we naturally judge based on what we can see—performance, outward appearance, or our own preconceived notions. This was exactly what the Jews were doing to the Gentiles, creating division in the Roman church. We are reminded, But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace (Romans 11:6). If God’s election were based on external factors, it would no longer be an act of grace.

God always has a faithful remnant among His people. They may not look like what we expect or worship in the way we are used to, but they truly fear and honor the Lord. You are not the only one who diligently serves God. You are not the only one who is on fire of Christ. Understanding this helps us guard against a separationist mindset within the church—an “us versus them” mentality that can hinder unity in the body of Christ. This attitude not only separates us from other believers but can also hinder our own worship of God.

Study Questions

  1. From Chapter 1-11, Paul was addressing the conflict between the Jews and non-Jews. How would you summarize the issue that caused this conflict?

  2. Summarize Paul’s theological solution/perspective that addresses the disunity in the Roman Church.

  3. What should be our attitude as people undeserving of this calling but have now been grafted into the family?

  4. The passage highlights some attributes of God’s character. List them and reflect on how they apply in your life. This is an opportunity to praise God!
