Living To Please Others

〰️

Living To Please Others 〰️

Reflections

The common belief is that we should live to please God rather than people and this is absolutely true. However, there are times when pleasing God requires us to deny ourselves certain freedoms for the sake of others and their spiritual well-being. You may firmly believe that drinking alcohol is not a sin and can defend your stance with Scripture, but if you are around a recovering alcoholic, wisdom and love would urge you to refrain. If you know a friend struggles with binge-watching TV, leading to unproductivity, perhaps you can choose not to start a new show in their presence. Or if someone is fasting, you might consider not eating in front of them out of respect.

You may be well within your rights to do certain things, but if doing so causes another person to stumble or violate their convictions, then love should compel you to abstain. The guiding principle here is love. Even our Lord Jesus set aside His divine privileges, humbling Himself to dwell among men and ultimately sacrificing His life out of love for us. Our goal should be to live in harmony, bearing with one another’s weaknesses while helping each other grow. If denying ourselves in certain ways can build up God’s people and strengthen His Church, then we must be willing to do so.

Study Questions

  1. In Romans 15:4, Paul refers to "the things that were written before." What is he referencing, and what purpose do they serve for believers today?

  2. Reflect on your own life—are there any personal choices or actions that might serve as a stumbling block for other believers? Based on today’s reading, how can you address them in a way that honors God?

  3. The Greek word koinonia in Romans 15:26 is commonly translated as "fellowship," yet here it is used for "contributions." How does this understanding of koinonia shape your perspective on generosity and giving?

  4. What did you learn about God’s nature, His ways and His will from today’s reading?
